Should you be appointed by the MTA president to sit on a committee or council, you should understand that there is a time commitment and certain responsibilities that come with that appointment.

The committees and their functions are:

Advisory Budget - Reports to the Executive Committee its assessment of the financial needs of the association and assists the Executive Committee in the preparation of the budget.

Affiliate Services Committee - Develops and implements projects to assist local association leaders in all areas of membership and advocacy.

Bylaws and Rules - The Committee on Bylaws and Rules receives and processes proposed amendments to the MTA Bylaws and Rules, makes a report to the March meeting of the Board and subsequently makes its recommendations to the Annual Meeting of Delegates.

Committee Review Panel - Monitors and makes recommendations relative to the MTA committee administration process.

Credentials and Ballot - The committee supervises the conduct of all MTA and NEA elections, registers delegates at the Annual Meeting, conducts ballot lotteries, reviews candidate bios, certifies election results, and monitors campaign regulations.

Electoral Review - Reviews and makes recommendations regarding electoral districts and regions in accordance with Article VIII of the MTA Bylaws and Rules.

Emerging Leaders Planning Committee - Plans the programs and workshops for emerging leaders at Summer Conference and other forums.

Environmental Health & Safety Committee - Supports, encourages and acts as a resource for the MTA and its affiliates in their efforts to promote healthy and safe environments for staff and students.

Equal Opportunity Council - Oversees the implementation of the Equal Employment and Affirmative Action Policy and serves as adviser to the Executive Director-Treasurer or designee.

Government Relations Committee - Develops and recommends to the Board the adoption of MTA's Legislative Program.

Health Care Benefits Committee - Studies emerging issues relating to all aspects of health care and assists MTA locals with collective bargaining health insurance plans.

Hearing - The sole responsibility of the Hearing Committee is to conduct removal proceedings for President, Vice President, District Directors, and Regional Executive Committee members.

Human Relations Committee - Solicits, reviews and selects recipients for the MTA Human and Civil Right Awards and plans the annual Human and Civil Rights banquet.

Investment Committee - Monitors and makes recommendations relative to MTA investments.

Lesbian and Gay Employment and Civil Rights Committee - Identifies organizational concerns of lesbian and gay members; recommends to the MTA Board of Directors mechanisms to address those concerns; monitors the implementation and effectiveness of lesbian and gay membership activities and communicate to the membership on all MTA activities which are of concern to lesbian and gay members.

Minority Affairs Committee - Advises the MTA Board of Directors on improving communication between the state association and its minority membership. MAC has the responsibility of monitoring the implementation of the MAC Plan and to continue the minority training program and initiate new ones as determined necessary. Identifies new ethnic-minority members to monitor the minority involvement plan, communicates to the membership via mass media to advise and assist the Board and locals regarding minority affairs.

MTA Education Support Professionals (ESP) Committee - Identifies and defines issues of concern to education support professionals, selects the recipient of the annual ESP Award, makes a recommendation to the Board for presentation of the ESP Award at the Annual Meeting of Delegates and plans the annual MTA ESP Conference and ESP programs at the Summer Conference.

MTA Public Relations/Organizing Campaign Committee - Seeks to enhance the image of public education and educators, including preK-12 educators, higher education, and education support professionals.

NEA Convention Social Subcommittee - Assists with the planning of events for the NEA Representative Assembly.

New Teacher Committee - Creates an environment in which the Association is there first in providing new members with orientation and information to assist them in getting acclimated to the new work environment; develops special resource material for new teachers; advises the Editor of MTA Today on information for the new teacher; trains a cadre of new teachers to act as organizers to go into college teacher preparation classrooms to explain the role and services provided by the Association; develops a very visible new teacher program at the Summer Conference and other forums to educate new teachers in the fundamentals, including regional workshops for new teachers on specific topics of interest.

Occupational/Vocational Education - Concentrates on the needs of all members involved in education-for-work employed in all schools and advises the Board of Directors regarding the interests and needs of these members.

Professional Development Committee - Works with the MTA Board of Directors and the MTA Division of Professional Development in the planning and implementation of professional policies and programs for MTA members.

Professional Ethics - Informs the membership of the existence of the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession.

Resolutions - Receives and processes proposed resolutions, makes a report to the March meeting of the Board and subsequently makes its recommendations to the Annual Meeting of Delegates.

Retired Members - Establishes opportunities for retired members to address and pursue issues of common concern. Creates avenues to safeguard and strengthen retirement benefits and makes recommendations to the Association on such issues. Provides forums for information sharing. Establishes involvement in the election of pro-education candidates to public office and lobbies for educational measures in support of public education. Coordinates communications with Retired District Delegates and retired members.

Statewide Membership Campaign Committee - Is charged with the development of the membership card, materials and programs to aid locals in their membership recruitment efforts.

Strategic Direction Committee - Is establishing a process to evaluate MTA's strategic direction and grassroots organizing component and will refine the strategic direction set by the Board.

Student Membership Committee - Provides professional development to prospective teachers, develops a statewide link between pre-service and active teachers, and develops student chapters on various campuses.

Summer Conference Planning Team - Helps plan and schedule workshops and events for the annual Summer Conference.

Task Force on Member Access to MTA Services - Will review current procedures.

Task Force on Treasurer Training - Plans treasurer training for the Summer Conference and other forums.

Task Force on Policy Review - Will review the MTA policy handbook.
